I create these Friday posts exclusively for my paid Substack members, which also includes video tea times, slow letters, seasonal book reviews and nature writing.

In this post, I share my journey as a beginner artist, where I provide details on the art projects I’m currently working on, alongside material’s I’ve used and resources I’ve enjoyed.

Last weekend, I did something I never thought possible. I finished a journal. And I mean cover to cover. My first ever junk journal, no less.

This is a project that I started towards the end of last year, with the hope that this would be something that could provide a creative, off-screen activity, outside of my work.

As I’ve returned to this journal, I’ve felt my creative confidence grow. Taking some quiet time to put together a spread, using simple materials (some that would otherwise be wasted), has become something I really look forward to.

So, I thought I would mark this moment by sharing my 5 favourite spreads from this journal. These are pages that I both really enjoyed creating and I think capture the start of my creative style.

I’ve included my reflections on what I’ve learnt from each spread, which I’m hoping may spark some inspiration for your own creative projects.
